St Francis in the Holy Land (unframed)
Size: 100 x 70cm
Material: high resolution print on quality linen canvas
Launch: 4 October, 2019 Feast of St Francis of Assisi
‘St Francis in the Holy Land’ is an artwork created to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the historic meeting in 1219 between Francis of Assisi and Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil at Damietta in Egypt.
It is an illustration of a story which is based on the documentary evidence available, but is also the artistic interpretation of these events by the artists, Luigi and Kate Agnelli.
The beautiful, intricate work-of-art walks us through the sequence of events which follows a spiral form, symbolising rebirth and eternal life. This spiral, which is to be read in an anti-clockwise direction, takes the onlooker along a path towards enlightenment. The narrative revolves around the main scene, which is of course the meeting between Francis and al-Malik al-Kamil in Damietta in Egypt but begins during the first years of the Franciscan order and ends with the death of Francis.
The dimensions of the original are 100x70cm on 100% cotton paper (Fabriano). The technique is graphic using Pilot, Micron and Staedtler pens 0.03-0.05mm; colour in pencil finished with gold and silver.
A coloured booklet is included walking you through each scene.
